| MARINE LIFE OF THE GALÁPAGOS “MARINE RESERVE”

For the Indo — Pacific region, the Galapagos Islands were rated “Best Dive Destination” in the world (2002, Rodale´s Scuba Diving magazine, USA 9th Annual Top 100) overall, best fish life, healthiest marine environment, best big animals dive, best advanced diving. The Islands were rated top dive site in both 2000 and 2002.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve is constituted by 14000 square kilometers of marine area protected by the National Park, whose principal objective is to preserve the marine species that inhabit the islands and limit the industrial fishing, enforcing the tourism, artisan fishing and diving.
The Galapagos National Park regulates and protects 97% of the soil in the archipelago, as well as the 40 miles of protected marine area within the reservation. Already a Biosphere Reserve since 1995, The Galapagos Marine Reserve was recently awarded as “World Heritage Site” in December 2001, following approval by UNESCO. which contributes to keep almost intact this vulnerable ecosystem with it’s regulations and efforts, the presence of wild life is preserved and the development of science and marine tourism have increased considerably allowing it’s former tourist to appreciate the wonders of the enchanted islands.
Due to unique bio diversity, where different species peacefully live together without fear from humans the Galapagos Islands have earned it’s title; “One of the Seven Wonder of Marine World”.
The high degree of biological diversity and endemism has led to the discovery of 2.900 marine organisms so far, of which 18 per cent are endemic. |
